‘The Slowest Wave’ is Coming to The Bowes Museum
Commissioned and presented by the award – winning North East based dance theatre company, Surface Area, The Slowest Wave is coming to The Bowes Museum on Saturday 23 November (7pm) to mesmerise audiences.
Performed by the internationally accomplished and expert Butoh dancer, Vangeline from New York City, this exceptional piece is not just a solo performance but a collaborative effort that marks the inception of the first neuroscientific study of Butoh, the innovative dance form originating in Japan in the 1950s.
Developed in partnership with neuroscientists in 2022, The Slowest Wave has been performed across the world and is the result in a groundbreaking neuroscientific study, conducted in Houston, Texas, that recorded the brain activity of Butoh dancers for the first time in history. The Slowest Wave delves deep into themes of stillness, nature, femininity, and the symbolism of female sensuality, drawing inspiration from the Delta brain wave, the slowest brain wave.
Chief Executive of Surface Area says: “It is an honour for Surface Area Dance Theatre to partner with The Bowes Museum to bring Vangeline from the New York Butoh Institute back to the North East. As a Butoh expert and a leader in the global advancement of Butoh, Vangeline’s return offers audiences, whether new to Butoh or familiar with it, the chance to connect with her and explore the depths of Butoh. We are excited to welcome audiences to experience The Slowest Wave performed by Vangeline in the stunning Blue Gallery at The Bowes Museum, where Vangeline will lead audiences into the inner workings of Butoh’s technique and philosophy.”
Get ready to be captivated by the unique blend of dance and theatre in this one-of-a- kind performance. The performance also includes a post-talk show, free for ticket holders and offers audiences to find out more about the work and ask the creative team any burning questions. The talk will include a BSL interpreter.
