Stephen Joseph Theatre presents Let’s Dance cinema season

Dust off your dancing shoes for a series of dance-themed film crackers screening at Stephen Joseph Theater every weekend until September. Book three or more events in the Let’s Dance season and get 20% off your tickets using the code LETSDANCE!

Kicking off the season this Saturday 6 July is Footloose (1984, 12A). A city teenager moves to a small town, where rock music and dancing have been banned and his rebellious spirit shakes things up.

On 11 & 12 July, enjoy Dance Revolutionaries (PG). From Emmy-nominated director David Stewart, the film explores the emotive world of dance visionaries Kenneth MacMillan and Robert Cohan, who redefined our connection to the art form.

Rounding out the weekend on 13 July is Singin’ in the Rain (1952, U). A silent film star falls for a chorus girl just as he and his delusionally jealous screen partner are trying to make the difficult transition to talking pictures in 1920s Hollywood.

On 20 July be captured by the story of Billy Elliot (2000, 15). A talented young boy becomes torn between his unexpected love of dance and the disintegration of his family.

Next up, on 27 July, is the cult classic, Dirty Dancing (1987, 12A). Spending the summer at a Catskills resort with her family, Frances “Baby” Houseman falls in love with the camp’s dance instructor, Johnny Castle.

Finishing up the month, on 31 July is Riverdance (2024 Encore).A 25th Anniversary production of the famous show, celebrated the world over for its Grammy Award-winning music and the thrilling energy and passion of its Irish and international dance.

With fun for the whole family, Happy Feet (2006, U) plays on 3 Aug. Into the world of the Emperor Penguins, who find their soul mates through song, a penguin is born who can’t. But he can tap dance!

Next, on 10 Aug is The Band Wagon (1953, U).Famous musical movie star Tony Hunter fears his career may be on the skids, but his friends, Lester and Lily have written a Broadway vehicle to kick-start his professional life.

On 17 Aug enjoy Step Up (2006, PG). Tyler receives the opportunity of a lifetime after vandalising a performing arts school, gaining him the chance to earn a scholarship and dance with an up-and-coming dancer, Nora.

Prepare to be inspired on 24 Aug with Flashdance (1983, 15). An 18-year-old female amateur dancer, who performs nightly at a dancing bar and works as a welder during the day, dreams of joining the Pittsburgh ballet school.

On 30 Aug enjoy the classic Moviedrome: The Red Shoes (1948, PG).A young ballerina is torn between life with her idealistic composer boyfriend and the intense career demands placed upon her by a fanatical show impresario.

Closing out the season on 7 Sept is Sweet Charity (1961, PG). Taxi dancer Charity continues to have faith in the human race despite endless disappointments at its hands, and hopes to finally meet the man to romance her away from her sleazy life. Just maybe, maybe, handsome Oscar will be the one to do it…
