Russell Maliphant Dance Company opens applications for Creative Intensive Programme

Russell Maliphant Dance Company (RMDC) has opened applications for its inaugural Creative Intensive Programme, a five-day choreographic intensive offering artists the opportunity to explore the relationship between movement, light and sound under the guidance of internationally acclaimed choreographer Dr Russell Maliphant OBE and composer and creative collaborator Dana Fouras.

Taking place from September 7–11, 2026, at Excelsior Studios in London, the programme will introduce participants to RMDC’s unique creative methodology, shaped through more than 30 years of interdisciplinary practice. The intensive will explore how movement, lighting and sound can work together as a unified artistic language, influencing atmosphere, emotion and meaning within performance.

Throughout the week, participants will work directly with Maliphant and Fouras through creative sessions, masterclasses and studio-based exploration. The programme will also provide opportunities to collaborate with lighting professionals, allowing artists to consider light as an integral creative element from the earliest stages of choreographic development.

The Creative Intensive is designed for professional and emerging choreographers, independent dance artists developing new work, theatre and performance directors interested in movement-led practice, lighting designers, sound artists and final-year or postgraduate students from dance and performing arts conservatoires. Practitioners working in somatic, interdisciplinary or site-specific contexts are also encouraged to apply.

No previous experience working with light or sound is required. Applicants are encouraged to bring an emerging idea for choreography or performance work to explore and develop throughout the intensive.

The programme is limited to 15 participants, creating an opportunity for focused mentorship and individual attention. The full programme fee is £580 plus VAT. Applications are currently open, with places filling quickly.
